IBToK (IB ToK) - IB Theory of Knowledge (ToK) Resources

IB Theory of Knowledge (IB ToK, IBToK) is a compulsory course for all students studying for the diploma of the International Baccalaureate. The course in Theory of Knowledge provides a model for interdisciplinary liberal studies courses and courses in critical thinking or applied philosophy, designed for students of pre-undergraduate or early undergraduate level.

IB ToK (IBToK) - Theory of Knowledge Web Sites

Most of the websites called up by a Google search under 'Theory of Knowledge' are university sites running courses in academic Philosophy, sometimes vert specialised courses in epistemology, or personal websites plugging a particular (and sometimes a peculiar) view of knowledge. As such, most are unsuitable for use in connection with the IB Theory of Knowledge course. The sites on this theory of knowledge portal have been selected by experienced ToK teachers to form a body of resources for anyone teaching or studying IB Theory of Knowledge and to encourage critical thinking. The sites are being constantly updated.

The Knowledge Page
The heart of the problem

The Sense Perception Page
Sense experience lies at the foundation of our knowledge.

The Language Page
Language is the medium through which our propositional knowledge passes, and is filtered.

The News Page
We tend to regard the news, especially television news, as our window on the world. Unfortunately, it often functions more like a distorting mirror. Democracies need properly educated citizens who are capable of making sound judgments about what is going on in the world. More than anything else they do at school, IB Theory of Knowledge should help prepare students to fulfill this role in an intelligent manner.

The Logic and Critical Thinking Page
Logic and critical thinking lie at the heart of the TOK experience. Students have never been in greater need of it than they are today.

The Mathematics Page
Mathematics is the most successful tool for the acquisition of knowledge consciously developed by mankind, yet we are often unaware of its limitations and so use it inappropriately.

The Science Page
This most prestigious and productive area of human knowledge is by no means immune from systematic error, and ideological distortion and manipulation.

The Social Sciences Page
A difficult field which raises many questions of knowledge

The Pseudoscience, Scams and Hoaxes Page
All too frequently people who should know better fall for intellectually indefensible systems of thought. Students of IB Theory of Knowledge should be immune.

The History Page
Controlling the understanding of where we have come from and who we are is a first step to controlling where we are going. Governments have always understood this.

The Ethics Page
Knowledge issues are often at their most controversial when they relate to ethical matters.

The Religion Page
Religious differences are among the most destructive in human history. If they are based upon false beliefs rather than knowledge, this is a tragic waste of life and effort.

The Philosophy Page
The most profound questions about knowledge considered using only the tools of reason.

The Culture Page
Cultural differences, with their accompanying prejudices, form perhaps the greatest barrier to the spread of knowledge. Students in international schools are better placed than others to appreciate their own cultural limitations, and the wealth of knowledge available to people in other cultures than their own.

IBToK (IB ToK) - Theory of Knowledge General sites which cover the entire range of Theory of Knowledge include:

ibtok.com home - The best content-filled site we have found so far - and very well illustrated - by Peter Flynn

Papers on the Theory of Knowledge - Undergraduate level papers. Reading material for good students who are also philosophically savvy. However, any students capable of profiting from this site will probably not need it anyway.

The Theory of Knowledge Essay Database - No use for student cribs because teachers, and, more to the point, examiners, know all about it. It might be useful as a source of ideas for the desperate.

ToK Links - A good portal site

Princeton - handouts and lecture notes for a Theory of Knowledge course at Princeton University. Only the better students need consult. It is associated with an undergraduate Philosophy course.

Thok Notes - Notes written by a teacher of IB Theory of Knowledge. Exercises are included.

Where Art and Science Entwine by 'EK' in 'Studies for Theory of Knowledge'
